You know, I wrote this article six years ago and can’t say that I’ve read it since. Your comment compelled me to reread it to make sure I’m not gaslighting anyone (as that was never my intention!). I do apologize that you interpreted it that way as I agree, some people are just unsupportive and frankly…jerks! But I do believe in giving everyone the benefit of the doubt (family, friends, etc), not necessarily for their sake but for the sake of my own mental health. That mindset has served me well over the past 40 years but it may not work for everyone!

I do also think it’s worth considering your family members’ opinions, if only for a moment. For better or worse, my family knows me better than anyone else and because of that, I want to be sure to consider their insight before launching into a new endeavor. One family member cautioned me against marrying my first husband. I should have listened, she was totally right. That same family member suggested that rather than going back to school for my graduate degree (The plans I had announced.), I should have a baby! Because that makes total sense! 😂😂 Sometimes family members’ opinions are valid, sometimes not, but I always try to consider all angles of a situation.

But again, you’re totally right, sometimes they just suck. 🤷‍♀️ In those case, I’ve learned to set and enforce healthy boundaries to protect myself.

I followed a program called Elite Blog Academy, which organized all of the information out there and gave me a solid plan to follow. You don’t necessarily need computer programming knowledge to get started, depending on which platform you use; some platforms like WordPress.com or Squarespace are more drag-and-drop.

I would suggest new bloggers find a program that gives you a step-by-step guide, like Elite Blog Academy or https://startablogbynumber.com It will give you direction and help you to avoid common mistakes. Best wishes!
