My Favorite Season is Spring Review
My Favorite Season is Spring, written by Patrice Wilkerson and illustrated by Brooke Beaver, tells the story of a little girl named Susie who wakes up to a buzzing bee and other signs of spring outside her bedroom window.
When she arrives at school, her teacher writes the names of the seasons on the board and asks students to share which is their favorite and why. Susie raises her hand to share that her favorite season is spring.
She describes her love for fresh air, blooming flowers, and a bright sun to her classmates. She then celebrates her favorite springtime activities, like kicking balls, flying kites, lying in the grass, and chasing butterflies.
The story ends with Susie back at home, watching and listening to birds as they sing outside her window, “Beautiful songs of spring.”
I appreciated the gratitude Susie expressed for simple pleasures throughout this book. In a world dominated by television and video games, the story encouraged young readers (and listeners) to notice and appreciate things like fresh air and a warm, sunny day.
She also described deeply enjoying outdoor activities like flying a kite and watching clouds in the sky. Her example encourages these activities in young children in a natural way, inspiring them to explore nature and move their bodies.
Also, as a parent, I always enjoy a sweet, quick read! With just one sentence per page, this book rings in at 158 words total. This story length offers parents the perfect opportunity to connect with their children for just a few minutes on even the busiest day.
Overall, this is a positive and sweet story small children are sure to enjoy. You can find it in both paperback and Kindle form on Amazon.
My Favorite Season is Spring Author Interview
Want to learn more about author Patrice Wilkerson? I did too! She was gracious enough to field a few questions and share what’s next for her!
Deb: My Favorite Season is Spring offers a sweet tribute to springtime, presented through the eyes of a child! What inspired you to write it?
Patrice: I was inspired to write My Favorite Season is Spring because spring is my favorite season because of the warmer weather, outdoor activities, and blooming flowers. I wanted to write a children’s book that could also be a learning tool for readers; they can learn all about the spring season and enjoy the beautiful spring illustrations as well.
Deb: My daughter and I enjoyed the greenery, fresh flowers, and animals illustrated and celebrated throughout the book! Which page or illustration is your personal favorite?
Patrice: Brooke did an amazing job on the illustrations. My personal favorite illustration is the one where Susie has her window open and is listening to the birds sing. I think that is such a true picture of spring.
Deb: I really appreciated how this story highlighted Susie enjoying the season outdoors, flying a kite, kicking a ball, lying in the grass, and chasing butterflies; it reminds and draws readers back to simpler times. Do you have any suggestions for parents who want to help their children spend less time on screens and more time outdoors this spring?
Patrice: Yes, I would suggest more outdoor activities such as biking, trips to the park, kite flying, and games like hide and seek or a scavenger hunt. There are so many fun outdoor activities that parents can plan for their children so that they are not spending so much time in front of the TV.
Deb: What originally inspired you to become a children’s book author? We’d love to hear your story!
Patrice: I have been writing poetry since I was eight years old. I published a book of poetry in 2010.
After publishing my poetry book, I wanted to get into writing children’s books. I always had a passion for children’s books. I love the illustrations and the wonderful stories that are in children’s books.
After studying several children’s books, I wanted to write a story that could be a learning tool for children. I am so pleased at how my story and the illustrations came together.
Deb: What’s your vision for the future of your writing? Do you have more books in the works? Or any upcoming projects you’re excited about?
Patrice: Yes, I am really excited to share that I am currently working on my second children’s book, entitled Susie’s Big Day at the Farm. It is about Susie going to visit a farm for the first time. The story will follow Susie as she is amazed by all the different farm animals
