Susie’s Day at the Farm, written by Patrice Wilkerson and illustrated by Brooke Beaver, tells the story of a little girl who visits a local farm with her classmates.

The book starts with Susie jumping out of bed with excitement and driving with her mother to meet her classmates at the farm. Right away, she discovers a sheep eating grass and chickens laying eggs.
After running around the farm, Susie is pleased to feed some baby goats, hug a few horses, and then go for a ride on the horse trail. With one more surprise in store (baby pigs!), she and her classmates declare their adventure “the best day ever”!

Susie’s Day at the Farm Review
As I always appreciate in Wilkerson’s stories, I love how this book offers a sweet respite back to simpler times. With no phones or computers or technology mentioned or illustrated, readers are invited to enjoy the simple pleasures of visiting a farm, petting animals, and lying in the grass.
I also enjoyed that Susie was able to visit a wide array of animals and peer just a bit into their farm habitats, eating habits, and more. It offered the perfect balance of teaching young readers without overwhelming them with facts or distracting from the story.
The illustrations also added lots of cute touches. From the farm animal stuffies in Susie’s bedroom to a little goat with a mouthful of hay at the farm, it included a lot of small details for young readers to notice and enjoy. Had my daughter and I read this when she was younger, I know we would have had to linger over each page as she pointed out her favorite details.

Overall, this is a sweet story that young children are sure to enjoy, especially those who love farms and farm animals. You can find it in both paperback and Kindle form on Amazon.
