Bear’s New Home: Book One of Bear’s Journey, written by Krystle Scroggins and illustrated by Charu Jain, tells the sweet story of how a St. Berdoodle puppy named Bear found his forever home. From taking a bath to being named to meeting his new family for the first time, readers hear the story from Bear’s unique (and sometimes silly!) perspective.
This book is the first in the “Bear’s Journey” series, with future books promising to relay more of Bear’s real-life adventures. From the watercolor illustrations to the slower pace of life depicted, this book hearkens back to simpler times, which seems fitting given Bear’s Tennessee roots and new Texas home.
It also interweaves Scriptures in a way that makes them feel more relatable to children. For example, Bear shares the story of how he was handpicked to be a part of his new family, then shares Ephesians 1:4 to explain how we are handpicked to be a part of God’s family.
And of course, the author bio at the end of the book includes a picture of the author with Bear himself – a very satisfying ending when the book is about a real-life dog!
I read the book with my seven-year-old daughter. Her review?
“Adorable! I liked in the ending that I get to see Bear in real life.”

If you’re looking for a sweet, timeless story that includes a cute puppy (what kid doesn’t like dogs?), beautiful fall scenes in watercolor, and Scripture, this book is definitely worth checking out.
