When I had an irate customer on the line at my call center job, I used to bluff, “I want to make sure I get you the best resolution possible. Do you mind if I put you on hold while I check out our options?”

I wasn’t checking out options; I already knew them. No, I was just giving myself a few moments of silence to take a deep breath and collect my thoughts.
